The meeting of the enlarged International Secretariat of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (I.A.O.) was held virtually on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, with the participation of parliamentarians-members of the I.A.O. from 15 countries (Armenia, Belarus, Cyprus, Egypt, Georgia, Greece, Jordan, Lebanon, Moldova, North Macedonia, Palestine, Poland, Russian Federation, Serbia, Sudan). During his speech, the I.A.O. Secretary General Dr. Maximos Charakopoulos, referred to the need for an extraordinary expanded composition of the I.A.O. statutory body, underlining, inter-alia: “Due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as the banning travelling measures taken by European countries on our colleagues from Russia, it was inevitable that significant obstacles would be raised in the functioning of our institution. Given the circumstances, we decided to postpone our scheduled General Assembly, scheduled to be held in Armenia. It was quite possible that most of the parliamentary delegations participating in the activity of our Organization did not attend, following the official policy of their countries. The aforementioned reasons, therefore, justify our decision to proceed with creative solutions and plan a virtual meeting of the Enlarged International Secretariat, in order to be able to discuss the future of our Organization in sobriety”. The I.A.O. members had the opportunity to exchange views regarding management of the situation that arose as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as the future course of the Organization in view of the changing geopolitical developments. During the meeting, the I.A.O. Secretary General presented the overview of the Organization’s activities from March 2022 to date. Moreover, the programming of future activities, as well as the budget up to March 2023 were approved. Finally, the members of the International Secretariat unanimously decided to accept the invitation of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus to hold the next meeting of the I.A.O. International Secretariat in Cyprus.
