Athens, June 7, 2022. Statement on the terrorist attack against the Catholic Church in Nigeria

The Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (I.A.O.) expresses its dismay and deep sorrow for the atrocious and unprovoked attack against Christian civilian citizens in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis in Owo city of South West Nigeria.

On Sunday 5th June 2022, Day of Pentecost of the Catholic Church, which is considered the Birth Day of Church, a worship place was targeted by cells of radicalization and religious fanatism, indiscriminately harvesting the lives of dozens of believers, including children, women and elders.

The I.A.O. has repeatedly condemned any form of terrorist act directed against religious symbols, monuments and places of worship and against faithful of any religion.

The I.A.O. expresses its sincere condolences to the people of Nigeria, the Christian Catholic brothers and the families of victims and unequivocally states its support in their efforts against terrorism and the jihadist branch of Boko Haram, which is operating in the northern part of the mostly crowded country of the African Continent.
