ATHENS, 14 APRIL 2022. APPEAL OF THE I.A.O. FOR CEASEFIRE OF THE RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN WAR DURING EASTER AND THE PREVALENCE OF PEACE

In view of the upcoming Orthodox Easter, the Secretary General of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (I.A.O.), Member of the Hellenic Parliament, Dr. Maximos Charakopoulos, made the following appeal for cessation of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the prevalence of peace:

“These days, the Orthodox world is entering the period of Divine Passion and the Resurrection of our Savior.

The Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, devastated, is observing the tragedy of a war between two fellow orthodox peoples, failing, to this day, to contribute towards reconciliation and peace.

However, these days, we feel the need to appeal again to the parties involved to suspend all military activity and to conduct a truce from Palm Sunday (17.04) until the second day of Easter (25.04).

We hope that this period will be able to enable the civilian population, who have suffered the consequences of the war, to devote themselves to their peaceful activities and restore somewhat their peace of mind, while, at the same time, the parties involved can seek a peace agreement that would put an end to this catastrophic war.

The I.A.O., as an interparliamentary institution, having condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the beginning, affirms its readiness to contribute in every way towards achievement of reconciliation and peace between the fellow Orthodox peoples, and hopes for a positive response to its proposal”.
