18TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY, PARIS, FRANCE, 2011

Main subject: “Religious values in the Economic crisis reality”
The 18th General Assembly of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy was successfully convened in Paris, June 21 – 24 2011.
Parliamentary delegations from about twenty five I.A.O. member-states as well as groups of Members of Parliament from different countries participated in the General Assembly. The General Assembly was held at the Collège des Bernardins, a historical monument in the heart of Paris with a magnificent architecture and unique spaces.

On the occasion of holding the General Assembly in Paris, the I.A.O. had the opportunity to honour the over 86 years of ongoing operation of the Saint-Serge Institute of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, a place that has hosted remarkable events in the field of theological line of thought. The members of the I.A.O. General Assembly had the opportunity to visit the Institute and be briefed about its history.

In the framework of the General Assembly reports on the main subject were presented by the participants as well as by: Prof. Mr. Ioannis Petrou, Department of Ethics and Sociology of the Theological School of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki with subject: “Economic crisis: the issue of values”, Prof. Valery Alexeev, I.A.O. advisor on the main subject, Dr. Kostas Mygdalis, I.A.O. Advisor with subject:

“Religious values in the Economic crisis reality. Remarks on the subject” and Prof. Bertrand Vergely, Department of Ethics of the Saint Serge Institute with subject: «Globalization: from terrorism to spirituality». During the General Assembly additional voting for the positions of Secretary General, Treasurer and Chairperson of the Committee on Regulation for the following two year tenure took place.

The overview of the I.A.O.’s activity and finances was approved by the Assembly. In addition, the General Assembly approved the program of activities as well as the budget for the following year.

The new annual Bulletin, as well as the minutes of the 17th annual General Assembly in Yerevan was distributed during the General Assembly.
The General Assembly, following discussion and interventions by the participants, approved the resolution presented by the Armenian Parliamentary delegation, the resolution presented by the Cypriot Parliamentary delegation, the statement presented by the Palestinian Parliamentary delegation as well as the resolution-conclusions on the main subject of the General Assembly.
